When gravitational waves pass throug h observers located far away from the source\, they cause oscillatory dist ortions of the separations among the observers. There is one more interest ing phenomenon that the gravitational waves can create lasting relative di splacements of the observers\, which is called the gravitational wave memo ry effect. Such effects are closely related to infrared properties of grav ity and other massless field theories\, including their asymptotic symmetr ies and conserved quantities. In this talk\, I will present the Brans-Dick e theory in Bondi-Sachs form\, discussing asymptotic symmetries\, conserve d charges\, and the gravitational wave memory effects.
