Short x-ray pulse s from free electron lasers (FELs) open a new regime for all scientific re search. The first x-ray FEL\, the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at th e SLAC National Laboratory on the Stanford campus\, provides intense short pulses that allow the investigation of ultrafast non-linear and multi-pho ton processes\, including time-resolved investigations in molecules. We wi ll report on the femtosecond response of molecules to the ultra-intense\, ultrafast x-ray radiation from FELs as well as on time-resolved investigat ion using x-ray pump-x-ray probe techniques.
