"Preliminary Results on the Nature of the Dark Energy from the ESSENCE Supernova Survey "Christopher Stubbs , Harvard University [Host: Brad Cox]
ABSTRACT:
The discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe provides
clear evidence of physics
beyond the standard model. Our current challenge is figuring out what
it means! I will describe the initial results we have obtained in
the ESSENCE supernova survey. This project was designed to detect 200
type Ia supernovae in the redshift range between 0.2 < z < 0.8, with
the goal of measuring the
equation of state parameter of the Dark Energy. We are paying
particular attention to potential sources of systematic
errors that might afflict the measurement, and I will describe some
of the steps we are taking to both control
and quantify these effects.
